I had Saturday to myself, so I threw the camera and the field recorder in the day pack and drove down through Interbay to Smith Cove. I had intended at starting at the Elliot Bay Marina, but I missed the turn I wanted so just took the next available and wound up behind a strip of industrial buildings along the railroad tracks. There were two diesel locomotives idling, so I parked and recorded them for a while (hoping that I could get something useful from the deafening roar with the 32 bit recordings). I locked the car and wandered South along the tracks. The dark clouds from the previous night's storm were still firmly packed in around Tahoma, but I had sunshine and blue skies overhead. I did several shots of the Terminal 86 Grain Facility, framing it in different ways with railcars &etc.
I climbed the pedestrian bridge that leads over the tracks to the Expedia Campus. The path there guides you through the new “amenities building” (restrooms and a coffee bar) to the beaches at Centennial Park. There are some fantastic views of Elliot Bay and the Seattle skyline - all brightly lit with dark storm clouds as a backdrop. Usually I'm pedaling through the park, either late for the ferry or battling the headwinds so not looking long at the sights. It was nice to wander slowly North, shooting as I went. It was nice to see so many people out enjoying the day.
I stopped across from the end of Pier 90, where they dock the big cruise ships. I stayed focused on the city and found a good vantage point on the terraces that are part of the Expedia landscaping. I set up the field recorder to capture the ambiance. I missed a pair of seagulls screaming overhead, but I did catch some friends discussing one's tattoos of onions, peppers and garlic. I stayed for a pomodoro, grabbing the camera whenever the clouds or passersby made a nice composition, but mostly just enjoying the day.
